Since the brand extension Smackdown Live has been dubbed the “Land of Opportunity” for stars who may not have had the spotlight on them before.
Superstars like AJ Styles, The Miz, Baron Corbin, Bray Wyatt, Alexa Bliss and many others have taken advantage.
Now here we are after the Superstar Shakeup and opportunity knocks once again.
Who would answer the call?
So far we’ve had one big surprise, and they couldn’t have chosen a better candidate.
Mahal has taken the road less traveled to the No. 1 contendership, and I personally appreciate it.
He went from developmental, to a weird storyline with The Great Khali, to the (amazing) jobber group 3MB, to his release in 2014.
After spending some time on the independent scene, his career brought him back to WWE in 2016, where he quickly landed right back into the jobber role.
It looked like he was going nowhere again.
That was until Wrestlemania.
We laughed when Mahal was one of the final two in the Andre the Giant
jobber Battle Royal. But the Wrestlemania run-in with Rob Gronkowski seemed to turn things around for the self-proclaimed Maharaja.
His recent improvement didn’t go unnoticed by yours truly as he made the jump to the Blue Brand in the Superstar Shakeup.
A few weeks later Mahal won the No. 1 contender match with a little help from the Singh brothers.
There’s two different point of views that go along with Mahal’s win.
- “What the $%^&!?!? Jinder is a jobber.”
- “This guy has improved a ton, let’s see how this goes”
Me, I’m leaning towards the second scenario.
And if you’re not giving him a chance, you’re being ridiculous.
Isn’t this why we watch the product? We watch for the twists and turns. We watch to see new rivalries. We watch to see what’s next.
Well, WWE finally delivered with a surprise and a potential new star in the making. Let’s not forget that he’s only 30 years old and could only be scratching the surface of his talent.
And there’s plenty of intrigue to his rise in terms of storyline.
Where do they go with the stable with the Singh brothers? Our guy Nestlemania hopes they turn into a JBL-like cabinet. But for now, the group is getting pretty good heat stealing No. 1 contender matches and Randy Orton’s title.
One thing that has me excited about his new opportunity is all the new feuds that could be on the horizon. With Jinder never getting close to the main event before, there are never-before seen battles waiting for him. (AJ Styles, John Cena, Nakamura are some that come to mind)
Only time will tell how far Mahal will go with this push, but if reports are true, WWE has huge plans for Jinder and the Singh brothers as the face of the Indian market.
But for now, let’s just sit back and enjoy something new. Because you never know what will happen.
Jinder Mahal has proven that.
