When this week’s show started, titled TakeOver: Blackpool Plus, we got a quick recap on how awesome TakeOver: Blackpool was. And it made me remember how much I miss Dave Mastiff and Eddie Dennis in No DQ mode. This week’s episode consisted of the three dark matches that took place before the actual TakeOver: Blackpool event. Even though the matches didn’t make the main show, they weren’t bad. Especially that last match. And that crowd definitely wasn’t as energetic as they were for the main show by a long shot. These three matches were Ligero vs. Saxton Huxley, Isla Dawn vs. Jinny, and a tag team match with Mark Andrews and Flash Morgan Webster vs. Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel.
The first match with Ligero vs. Saxton Huxley was ok. I have a hard time taking Ligero serious with that. . . mask. He just seems out of place in NXT UK. I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me.
Anyway, the match didn’t really pick up until the very end where Huxley delivered what looked like a running atomic drop face plant into the turnbuckle that looked pretty painful. Soon after though, Ligero would respond with stunner jumping from the ropes followed by his C4L Springboard Tornado DDT. It was an awesome ending that had the crowd giving a standing ovation. Just wish more of that match had that pacing at the end.
Next up was Isla Dawn vs. Jinny. I’m really wanting to like Jinny. Her ‘I’m better than you fashionista’ schtick is interesting but I think I just need more time with her. There were some nice spots here and there and definitely not a boring match. The match ended with Jinny hitting her X-Factor spike from the middle turnbuckle. I tell you what. When that move is executed perfectly, that’s one hell of an exclamation point.
After the match, we got a short and to the point promo from Travis Banks challenging Jordan Devlin to a match next week. This is one of the reasons I like the NXT shows better than Raw and SmackDown. No overly exhausting promos or anything that’s not an actual wrestling match. Nothing forced or unnatural. It’s all organic. It keeps me immersed and the matches create the story.
The final bout was the tag team match with Mark Andrews and Flash Morgan Webster vs. Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel. This match was incredible and it’s a shame it didn’t make the main card. There was great chemistry here. You had the high flyers doing their high-risk moves against some very talented, powerful wrestlers. There wasn’t a dull moment. The spot where Barthel gorilla press tossed Andrews to Aichner then delivered a brainbuster was incredible to witness and got a huge pop from the crowd. They were really sucked in then. The match sadly had to end though. With Aichner and Barthel delivering a spinning powerbomb/European uppercut combo to Webster. Not as eye-opening as the guerrilla press/brainbuster combo but I’m not griping at one single second of this match. Aichner and Barthel have gelled incredibly well in a very short time together. Hopefully they’ll be in the title hunt sooner than later.
That wraps it up for this week’s NXT UK show. I’m excited to see how the aftermath of TakeOver: Blackpool plays out next week. Well probably be getting a focus on WALTER and let’s not forget Travis Banks vs. Jordan Devlin. Thanks for reading and long live wrestling!
