GALLERY: History of Royal Rumble Winners Pointing at the Wrestlemania Sign

The Royal Rumble is the official start of Wrestlemania season. That means over the next few months we’re going to see a ridiculous amount of people pointing up to the Wrestlemania sign that WWE usually has hanging from the rafters.

In honor of the big event on Sunday, we wanted to take a look at the history of Royal Rumble winners pointing at the sign.

2008: Thanks to my brother, I learned that John Cena was the first Royal Rumble winner to point at the Wrestlemania sign.

2009: Randy Orton doesn’t usually exude excitement. After winning the 2009 Royal Rumble, that didn’t change. A pissed off Orton stood in the ring and slowly pointed at the logo.

The fireworks didn’t go off.

He pointed like a bazillion times and nothing happened.

Then Orton must’ve been told that he needed to go to a specific top rope for the “perfect shot.”

He was not pleased.

2010: I couldn’t find a picture of it (Google failed me), but Edge pointed at the sign after spearing the crap out of everyone in sight before eliminating John Cena to win the 2010 Royal Rumble.

2011: I was at the 2011 Royal Rumble, sitting behind the Wrestlemania sign when Alberto Del Rio won. I like to think he was actually pointing at me.

In all seriousness, the best part of that win was Ricardo Rodriguez running around yelling “ALBERTO DEL RIO!! ALBERTO DEL RIO!!” until he had no voice left.

Santino should have won. He could’ve at least pointed at the sign with the Cobra.

2012: Remember when Sheamus won the Royal Rumble?

I totally forgot.

But there is photographic evidence of him pointing at the sign, so it must have happened.

He ended up going to Wrestlemania, kicking Daniel Bryan’s teeth in and winning the World Heavyweight Championship in 18 seconds.

2013: John Cena loves pointing at the Wrestlemania sign. He’s won two Royal Rumbles now, so he has plenty of practice.

2014: Batista returned to WWE for the first time in years and everyone expected him to win the Royal Rumble. That didn’t mean fans weren’t going to be pissed when Daniel Bryan didn’t win. In fact, Bryan didn’t even make a Royal Rumble appearance after losing to Bray Wyatt earlier in the night.

Fans weren’t happy with Boo-tista.

2015: The wheels were rolling on Roman Reigns’ monster push. WWE hoped they could get fans behind him by having The Rock raise his hand after winning the Royal Rumble.

Oh, yeah. Then he pointed at the sign.

2016: There was no pointing this to close out the 2016 Royal Rumble and I was a little surprised when I revisited it. This was that goofy Royal Rumble where the winner would be crowned the WWE Champion. HHH won and was raising the championship already, so he didn’t need to look forward to Wrestlemania.

2017: Randy Orton got another chance to point at the Wrestlemania sign in 2017. He succeeded without any issues.

2018: Two Royal Rumbles means TWICE THE POINTING! Bonus points because Ronda Rousey interrupted Asuka’s celebration to point at the sign and walk away.

Who will win the Royal Rumbles this year? Your guess is as good as mine. But the chances are very good that Royal Rumble will be signing off with SOMEONE pointing at the sign.

  1. I’d love for a Bullet Club alum to win the Rumble eventually, so that someone could do the Hall/Nash pose the world has been waiting for.
