NXT Recap 1/30: The “forgotten” matches

It’s the week after a Takeover Weekend, so this week of NXT recap is a little light.  I have a friend at the NXT tapings tonight, and from what I am told (he knows better than to give me spoilers) we are in for a fun start when we get restarted next week!  Until then, it’s a week of recap and some tag-team action from Phoenix.

Io Shirai and Kairi Sane vs. Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir

It is quite fitting that Duke and Shafir are wearing green. . . On paper this was an extremely lopsided matchup.  Duke was doing great playing the heel early on, taunting Kairi with her height.  There were a few spots where it looked like the Sky Pirates were mocking their foes greenness.

With the amount of heat Duke and Shafir got, once they get more experience in the ring they will be a formidable team.  It actually was not as one-sided as I thought it would be.  Both teams had some offense.  I think Duke was holding back on some of her kicks.  Especially working with Kairi and Io, this was her time to let those kicks loose, as they work pretty stiff themselves.  Io had an awesome escape from a headlock, that led to a great hot-tag and the comeback for Kairi.  I love the Sky Pirates’ tag team offense, I almost feel like they need to get called up for the Elimination Chamber match, they’ll get a great pop just being in the match.  I don’t know what ladies teams that Smackdown Live Has to provide after Rose and Deville declared themselves in, so it is possible!

Just saying, in the recap video of Gargano vs. Ricochet, Percy brought up that Johnny claimed to be draped in championships in 2019.  Johnny is not done in 2019.

Next up is a recap of Bianca Belair and Shayna Baszler.  We get a clip of Belair claiming that being undefeated is not a record, it’s a mindset.  She still claims to be Un-De-Feat-Ed.  Not sure how I feel about that one.  Maybe it’s time to head back to creative and get a new catch-phrase.   It was nice to see Belair comment on Sam Roberts’ comments from the pre-show about Belair not belonging, to which she said: “Sam Roberts can Kiss My Ass.”

Maybe now that we are getting some inter-gender action we can get Belair vs. Sam Roberts.  If you listen to Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins’ Major Wrestling Figure Podcast, you know they would be excited to watch that match!

We get the recap video of War Raiders vs. Undisputed Era.  This clip didn’t do it justice.  If you still haven’t watched that match you need to get on it!  War Raiders get their celebration interview and declare that the War has started and the reign has begun.  It will be interesting to see who is next up for the War Raiders.

Clip-show time for Matt Riddle and Kassius Ohno!  Matt Riddle commented that he didn’t make Ohno submit, he didn’t win by pinfall or knock him out, he won by beating him to submission.  It was a fairly cocky promo, as with most post-Takeover promos it leads to more questions than answers.  One can assume he is done with Ohno, but the question of who is next will be interesting.  I, for one, would like to see him up against the Undisputed Era.  Matches with Riddle vs. O’Reilly or Bobby Fish would be a great battle that I would be glued to my TV for.

Next up is Tommaso Ciampa vs. Aleister Black. They did a great job catching the emotions of all involved, and catching all of the great spots of the match.  It was followed by a great shout-out on Twitter from Paul Heyman, and the post-Takeover video of the brawl leading to this Sunday’s Halftime Heat.

Street Profits vs. Forgotten Sons

Let me start by saying: loving the Harlem Heat ring gear by the Street Profits.  This match stemmed from the Street Profits forgetting the Forgotten Sons when they named all of their tag team competition a few weeks back.  The “forgotten” puns don’t stop there, Mauro and Nigel kept them up the entire match.

A lot of back and forth throughout the match.  I fear that Montez Ford might suffer from his unbelievable ability to sell.  He always seems to find himself in unbelievable spots that he has to sell the crap out of.  His offense is so unbelievable, as even I found myself out of my chair when he jumped over the top rope for the Tope Con Hilo.  Angelo Dawkins got distracted by Jackson Ryker ringside and Blake hit him with a Tope Suicida.  After that, it was all over for the Street Profits.

Both teams had a great showing, I don’t see the Forgotten Sons getting a push to be contenders yet.  If they do, it’ll be a quick one against the War Raiders.  Tag Team depth is very good in NXT, so there will be lots of chances for everyone moving forward.

That is all for NXT this week.  Check in on Twitter @TJoftheJK for my thoughts and insights throughout the week, and explore for all of the thoughts of the entire team.
